mario upgrades with coins.
Except Mario would be replaced by the situation and goombas would be snookies.

Absolute truth about new age western style games. We are living in a childs world of handicaps and training wheels. We are so afraid to let the player fail, that we turn the game into a +press a to continue+ fest.

yeah…The wave of social gaming and how I dont want to ride it, but would be futile to fight it. When in Rome I guess.
yeah really funny and all… but not true at all.

@Zack
I may have overexaggerated… and overgeneralized. But for me this “different” is bad. I really do miss the simplicity of the old games… very few games like that are made nowadays.
Anyway, great post.

I’m glad it wasn’t designed in 2010!
Where is the like button to like this article ?
Gaming used to be more hardcore back in those days. Too much lowest denominator these days…

That is so true. Though, to some degree tutorials and instructions is something that’s better nowadays. I mean, try to pick up Metroid for the NES. Well, I guess back then games were optimized to take less space on the cartridge with all the instructions, back stories and whatnot on a printed manual.
In a good game you can disable all that shit.
Hahaha How incredibly true this is.

Oh, I forgot about that. Well, at least with the DVD the tutorial is -outside- the game.
I mostly meant Nintendo is free from sticking pointless achievements and facebook statuses in their games. With tutorials, they’re almost as guilty as everyone else.
Well done, and also extremely scary! Thank goodness they can never take away the classics.

Hilarious man, you totally nailed the facebook reference with the finding a mushroom. I lol’d.
I’d love to see a version 2.0 of this where you satirize YouTube replay videos, 4Square location updates, Twitter micro-updates (“I collected a coin” “I shot a fireball” – “subscribe to my RSS feed”), and Steam (“5 of your friends are also currently playing level 5-1″) also. Good stuff!
