Standard Pissing and Moaning

Metal Gear Solid 4 got nominated for best writing on X-Play’s 2008 awards.

Hold on a sec.

HA!

HA!

HAhahahaha! ::cry:: If you look at the rest of the categories, it becomes painfully obvious that they only played the top six or so games of the year. These end of year lists always warm the cockles of my heart on how ridiculous they end up being, but kudos to Xplay for not picking Gears of War 2 or Grand Theft Auto 4 for game of the year.

These sites (IGN/Gamespot/Xplay/etc) all seem to be so afraid of their bread-and-butter 13-year old angry nerd demographic that they would never nominate something for an “award” that wasn’t fanboy chic.

The gameplay innovation of the year is level creation and sharing? Tell that to me fifteen years ago when I was making ZZT levels and sharing them on AOL’s boards. Isn’t Wii Fit slightly more innovative that combat using the right stick? How about Dead Space’s dismemberment shooting-mechanic? Or Burnout Paradise’s live dropping in of people on your buddy list? That was pretty spectacular.
